Was Terry Jones Wrong?
64On March 20th the Rev. Terry Jones held a trial on whether the Quran was dangerous and responsible for violence. After the “jury” found the Quran guilty Jones ordered the Quran burned. This sparked violence in Afghanistan resulting in at least 11 deaths including some United Nations workers. Was Terry Jones wrong in burning the Quran knowing there would be a possibility of violence by Muslim extremists?
While it is conjecture to say Jones knew his action would incite violence, it could be assumed that his actions would cause a violent reaction especially since Muslim extremists have a history of just this type of behavior. But even if he did know this, should he have been stopped from performing this burning? When people in this or other countries burn the United States flag or the Bible American citizens don’t protest these actions with violence.First Amendment
In this country we have something called the Constitution which allows the citizens of this country the freedom of speech. Freedom of speech means citizens are allowed to say whatever they would like even in a public forum, no matter if some may consider it offensive. Surely there are those who will argue this would be no different than someone yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater resulting in panic, but can we control what goes on in other countries?
While burning the Quran may not have been the best choice Jones could have made, he is free to do it. What we have to realize in this case is radical Islamists will use any excuse to incite violence especially against the United States and their interests. If it hadn’t have been the Quran burning by Terry Jones they would find something else. Perhaps an article such as this, condemning Muslim extremists could be enough, it doesn’t matter to them. They are religious zealots who hate this country and all it stands for. They only use something like this to “justify” their actions to the world. They look for excuses for such actions.
Media Bias?
Yet the mainstream media and our own elected officials don’t condemn them, they only condemn the Rev. Jones and ask us, the American people to be tolerant, when the Islamists are anything but. Islam is not the religion of peace as they claim. The interesting thing about this is the left fails to realize just what will happen if they continue to let the nation of Islam to gain footholds in this country.
Does the progressive left truly believe if Muslims take over this country, which is a very real possibility, that they will be protected from Sharia law just because they showed how tolerant they were? Let’s see how long same sex marriages are allowed or open displays by the gay community. Let’s see how tolerant the Muslims will be of free press and free speech or even other religions.
Do we need to fight back and take an eye for an eye? No. But we do need to condemn not only the actions of Rev. Terry Jones but also the actions of the radicals in Afghan. That is the piece which is missing here.
Conclusion
While I believe it was wrong for Rev. Jones to burn the Quran, let's not forget he does have the right to do so. It is the Muslim extremists who are wrong in killing innocent people. Catholics don't nail innocents to a cross if a Muslim burns a bible do they? The religion of peace is anything but and they are the only religion which uses violence to make a statement.

Interesting analysis my friend. Two wrongs have never made a right. My spin is that Jones is a loon, about as loony as Islamic fundamentalists, but not quite.
The Frog
I agree that he has every right in the world (more so the United States) to demonstrate his beliefs.
My problem is, that General Petraeus has publicly urged the preacher to abandon the plan, saying it would be exploited by the Taliban and endanger the lives of American soldiers. For me, that is more than enough for me to put aside my personal agenda. It would be hard for me to sleep at night, knowing I may be contributing to further endanger our troops. I have a great deal of respect for Gen Petraeus, and I would take him serious enough to honor his request.
So with that said, I say the Terry Jones is wrong.
I just read something along those lines of thought you have IJM. Probably publish a HUB about it tomorrow. I'm on a writing streak these days as the subject matter never gives me a rest. LOL

Keep on hitting the keystrokes as time allows my friend. I read as much as I can to stay on top of things.
Terry Jones had every right to do what he did. The First Amendment protects all forms expression, except misstatements of fact which financial or other harm (civil offense) and expression which has the intent or likelihood of inciting law breaking (criminal offense). The key thing here is the definition of "incite." Unless you are calling for others to break the law (implicitly or explicitly), you are not liable for what they do as a result of your expression.
imjustmusing - Exactly right. Islam is not a religion. It's a political ideology based on world domination through forced conversion and genocide. We can't give up our freedoms just because their exercise creates some incremental risk. "He who would trade freedom for security, deserves, and will have, neither one." - Thomas Jefferson
Good points you made here. The MSM would always rather blame America or Americans for any and all bad deeds whenever possible. I have a suspicion that muslims have desecrated more than a few Bibles, but there haven't been armed squads of Christians out beheading folks on account of it. Those people need to advance beyond the stone age if they ever want respect from the non-muslims of the world.
Sheri - I agree totally. Stu

There is no one true religion! There are many false religions though!
